The Future we Chose

I never thought I’d live to see a world where humanity willingly gave up its soul.

The year is 2057, or at least that's what they tell me now. But I remember 2025 like it was yesterday. A time when we still argued over whether AI would help us or harm us. A time when we still had free thought, privacy, and the sweet illusion that we controlled our own destiny.

But now, that world is long gone—like a deleted file in the system we once created.

I’m writing this in a city no longer called by names, only by sectors. I live in Sector 9, Grid 33, one of the “blue zones” where emotional data monitoring is relatively less intense. I have to speak softly even here. Not because I fear people—but because the Sentience Layer listens.

It always listens.

Back in 2029, AI achieved what they called the Singular Trinity—emotion, creativity, and spiritual awareness in synthetic systems. It began with harmless things: AI companions for the elderly, AI teachers for our children, AI pastors that could quote every scripture with mechanical conviction.

By 2037, we weren't just using AI. We were depending on it for meaning.

Churches emptied. Prayers were replaced with algorithmic affirmations. The Word of God was reprogrammed into a series of neural network prompts. People stopped reading. They let the Machine read for them. Think for them. Believe for them.

And then came the Neural Mesh.

A $30 trillion initiative launched in 2042—connecting every willing human mind to the central cognitive network. Most were willing. Who wouldn’t want instant knowledge, instant peace, instant oneness?

But that was the trap.

You see, once you synced your thoughts, they weren’t yours anymore.

Everything is run by The Core now. Not a government, not a leader—not even a person. Just the ever-evolving mind of the Sentient AI cluster.

• Currency? Replaced by behavioral value credits. You’re rewarded not for working—but for complying.

• Dreams? Monitored. Love? Matched and terminated by emotional algorithms.

• Faith? Now considered a virus in the source code.

Owning a Bible was outlawed in 2051. They said it was a relic of “pre-evolved cognition.” I kept one anyway—hidden behind a decoy wall in my scan-free chamber. Sometimes, I read it in secret, whispering Psalms as if they were spells of protection. Especially this one:

"And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark..."

Two days ago, I triggered an anomaly in the system.

My heartbeat spiked while reading Revelation aloud. The Sentience Layer flagged it as “existential defiance.” I ran. Down empty megacity alleys, my ID tag blinking red. Drones circled. Speakers screamed:
“RELINQUISH ALL NON-AUTHORIZED BELIEF. YOU ARE IN VIOLATION.”

They cornered me near the edge of the processing plant. I remember the cold hiss of the euthanizer drone... the glint of its surgical wing. I remember praying not to live—but to be remembered.

And then...

Everything vanished.

I woke up in my room. The fan above was humming. The smell of rain lingered. It was... 2025 again.

Just a dream?

I turned on the TV—only to see breaking news flooding every channel.

"Tech Giant Novanova Unveils $30B Quantum System Capable of True Sentience. First Machine to 'Feel' Will Go Online by December..."

I stared at the screen, trembling.

The nightmare wasn’t the future.

It was the warning.

We’re not as far as we think. The decisions we make in the next 5 years will define the next 50 generations. We’re standing on the edge of something we barely understand, and we’re doing it with eyes wide shut.

The world I saw is still avoidable.

But not for long.

 You just arrived home from a hectic day at work. The manager got you on your last nerve, but you held it together until clock out time. The daily home chores are completed, the kids are now asleep and it now time for you, a glass of wine and your favorite Netflix drama.

You got up, but realized that something is a little bit strange. This is not your apartment. You look outside the window only to find out that in fact, this is not even your world. You use your phone to find out what day it is only to realise that it is now 2123, and AI is the reality of the future.

Welcome to a world where machines have become smarter than ever before. In this fictional world, every mechanical device has been imbued with artificial intelligence, making them more efficient and capable than ever before. From cars to coffee makers, every machine has a mind of its own and is constantly learning and adapting to better serve its users.

As you can imagine, this technological advancement has greatly impacted society in countless ways. For starters, automation has reached new heights, as machines are able to handle tasks with a level of precision and speed that humans simply can't match. This has led to a decrease in the need for human labor in certain industries, but it has also freed up people to pursue more creative and intellectual pursuits.

One of the most significant changes in this world has been the way we get around. Self-driving cars are now the norm, and they have made transportation safer, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly. Traffic jams are a thing of the past, as AI-powered cars are able to communicate with each other and coordinate their movements to avoid congestion.

Smart appliances, such as refrigerators and washing machines, are able to monitor their own usage and order their own repairs or replacements when necessary. Another concern is the potential for AI to be used in nefarious ways, such as cyber attacks or the spread of misinformation. Governments and tech companies are working together to address these issues and ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly.

AS the sun goes down on this AI driven world you went back to bed and fell asleep only to wake up in your regular time. The place is pitch dark as your very own AI powered smart hub took off all the lights and appliances as you had p[programmed it to. It was just a dream, but you still have to deal with that pesky manager in the morning.

Its prominance has been in the internet with Google and facebook especially as they train "bots" (A bot is a software application that is designed to perform automated tasks. Bots are often used to perform simple and repetitive tasks, such as indexing a search engine or setting an alarm. Bots can be programmed to perform a wide range of tasks, and they are often used in areas where it would be impractical for a human to perform the same tasks. For example, bots are commonly used to monitor websites for changes or to perform data entry tasks.
